Lessons from a Dot Com Mogul

For the last few months, I have been a very regular reader of JohnChow.com and have found a wealth of knowledge on the site to satisfy numerous interests of mine. Recently John proposed an offer to his readers where he will provide a link back to any site that writes a review of his site. I’m ashamed to admit that it has taken me this long to write a review of the site but there is no better time than when there is an incentive. 🙂

For those that are not familiar with John Chow dot Com, I will say that there is quite a bit on the site that appeals to a variety of interests. John covers a variety of topics, including technology & web content, cars and finances. In all honesty, it is rare to see a day go by where there is not at least one post that will catch your interest and give you something to think about.

Due to the nature of this website, the topics that I usually find the most interesting include Investing, The Net and Ramblings.

Investing. Obviously the posts in this section typically tie in nicely with the content on my site. However, one of the things that I really like about John Chow dot Com is that I don’t always agree with John’s opinions but it provides food for thought and creates the opportunity for further discussion. Given John’s background as a dot com mogul, I would really like to see more content in this area because I am sure there are many valuable lessons that John can share.

The Net. Since I am running this website and hoping to learn ways to create passive income (although I am not sure the work it takes to run a successful website can be considered passive), there are numerous posts of value in this topic. Whether it be the invaluable list of John’s favorite WordPress plugins to his regular recaps of how the monetization of his website is progressing, I have learned numerous tips by reading these posts.

Ramblings. This topic appeals to me because it usually provides more of a personal insight into John’s experiences and it is always nice to feel a connection on some level.

One thing that I see with some regularity that always catches my attention on John’s website is the apparent lack of spell checking and grammar, but I can be rather anal in that regard and that does not discount the value often contained in the posts. While I know it sounds like this review is a fluff piece to promote John’s site as almost everything has been positive, I really feel John Chow dot Com is a site that should be a daily read for most people.

There are a handful of websites that I read regularly as I continue to pursue the opportunity to run a successful blog and earn a little money in the process. One of those sites is obviously JohnChow.com, with the others being sites from Darren Rowse (ProBlogger) and Jeremy Schoemaker (ShoeMoney).

Please don’t just take my word for it though, visit John’s site and I challenge you to not find something of value.

    Hi,
I like your review and especially appreciate that you don’t only see it all rosy (ie. grammar).

Adam, I’ve been in that boat myself and wish I had done things differently but I guess that was part of my learning process.

If there is anything specific that you think might be an area of interest for poor students, let me know.

dk, thanks for the comment. As much as I love reading JohnChow.com, nobody is perfect and I wanted to be sure to mention little things I have noticed.

Re: the grammar/spelling, I was aware that English is not John’s natural language and I wouldn’t hold it against him even if it were, but it is just something that I notice. FWIW, I also see numerous grammar/spelling mistakes on the other sites I visit regularly (ShoeMoney being one, he actually has a funny comment about that in a recent post).

Nice review, also what theme are you using? it is very similar to chow’s theme itself isnt it?

  8. mnc says:

Daniel, this is the same theme as JohnChow.com is using although I tweaked the styles a little bit to try and make it look a little different. It seems this is a very popular WP theme.

Sorry about the delay in responding.
